First Steps 4K Leader Spotlight: Janice Ironside, MEGA Child Development Center - SC First Steps

First Steps 4K Leader Spotlight: Janice Ironside, MEGA Child Development Center

What led you and inspired you to become a First Steps 4K Leader?

I was very interested in the 4K concept when they began a pilot program in SC years ago.  I was active with my local First Steps organization, and they urged me to apply for the First Steps 4K program. I was excited about the quality training that they would provide for my staff and me.

What are your core values as a leader?

To lead by example.  I believe I am a purpose driven leader, and I communicate my vision to my teachers.  I praise my teachers continuously for their commitment to quality to the children in our program and to the program itself.

How do you foster a positive and supportive work environment for your staff?

I am very supportive of my teachers in every way.  I encourage and provide avenues for training and furthering their education.  We have numerous meetings monthly and we work as a team to solve problems and encourage one another. We have monthly catered lunches, retreats, and "walk and talk" time with my teachers.  MEGA CDC compensates teachers very well and they are afforded vacation days, sick days, maternity leave, bonuses, and retirement plans with 100% match.

What strategies do you use to build strong relationships with families and your community?

Communication is the key to building strong relationships. Families help us assess how well we are meeting their needs and have the opportunity to provide suggestions and new ideas for the program.  We extend educational activities to the home and community. We strive to connect families to each other and our teachers.  We have family friendly seating to encourage families to spend time with their child and their class in our naturalized outdoor learning environment (especially at pick up time). MEGA CDC participates in community activities such as "fall fest", fun runs, and parades, connecting our families with the community.

What are your long-term goals for your career in early childhood?

My long-term goal is to expand my vision of quality early education, outdoor learning environments, and gymnastics to create the ideal setting and experiences for all children.

What impact do you hope to make on the lives of your students, your staff, your families and your community?

I hope the children have an amazing childhood, I hope the staff feel proud to be a part of this program and I hope the families feel lucky that their child attends MEGA CDC. I hope the community will have many MEGA graduates because they will be fantastic well -balanced adults. I know, because I keep in contact with so many of our MEGA graduates and their families.
