Get Ready for School

South Carolina’s Profile of the Ready Kindergartner

What does it mean to be ready for school?

A ready kindergartner is healthy, eager to learn, and supported by caring adults.

The Building Blocks

How does school readiness happen? It starts at birth and builds every day. Here are five simple ways to help your child grow and learn.

1
Keep them safe and loved
Children learn best when they feel secure.
2
Build healthy routines
Bedtimes, nutritious meals and regular checkups help children grow strong.
3
Talk, read and sing together
These everyday back-and-forth moments build your child's brain.
4
Make time for play
Play builds problem-solving skills and helps children learn to get along with others.
5
Lean on your community
Help from family, friends, and local resources can make a real difference.

About the profile of The Ready Kindergartner

South Carolina's Profile of the Ready Kindergartner is the state's shared definition of school readiness. It describes what a ready child looks like across five developmental domains, and what families, educators, and communities around that child need to provide.

For early childhood providers, educators, and policymakers, the Profile is a framework for alignment across programs, settings, and systems. It establishes a common language and shared expectations that connect home, classroom, and community — from a child's earliest days through the kindergarten transition.

The Profile was developed collaboratively by SC First Steps and the SC Department of Education, with input from kindergarten teachers, early childhood leaders, and stakeholders from across the state. It was formally adopted by the SC First Steps Board of Trustees and the State Board of Education in 2015.
